WHAT IS RESPITE CARE?

If you are a caregiver, then you know that caregiving can be both rewarding and challenging. One of the biggest challenges is the time and energy it takes to provide care for an elderly loved one. Sometimes a break is needed and that’s where respite care comes in. Whether it’s for a few hours or a much-needed vacation, there are many providers who offer short-term care for your loved one while you are away. Never feel guilty for taking you time, after all, you can’t pour from an empty cup.

5 Places to Find Respite Care

  1. Home Care– In-home care is a popular choice as it allows loved ones to stay in the comfort of their home. Caregivers can provide services day or night for a few hours or an extended period of time.

  2. Senior living Communities– Contact your local nursing home or assisted living community to see what respite options are available. These types of communities can provide stimulation through socials and and daily activities.

  3. Adult Daycares- Many adult daycare centers provide a safe and secure environment for seniors while you work, run errands or just take a break. If you are looking to go on vacation, this is not an overnight service so if you are looking to go on vacation, senior living facilities or in-home care may be a good option for you.

  4. Friends and Family- Has a friend or family member offered to help? If you are feeling overwhelmed and in need of a break, now may be the time to take them up on the offer. This option usually works best for short breaks such as a trip to the grocery store or quick errand. Also consider just having them over to help with dinner and have a few laughs. Sometimes just the presence of a friend can help you feel rejuvenated.

  5. Volunteers Services- Volunteer services may be harder to find but there are approximately 750 programs in the U.S. that provide respite care through volunteers for those looking to get away for just a few hours. A geriatric care manager in your area may be able to provide information on available volunteer services in your area.

Tip for the family Caregiver:

It’s common for both of parties to be somewhat reluctant to separate. Prepare your loved one for respite care ahead of time. Having a conversation regarding having in-home care or a facility stay can reduce fear and anxiety while you are away. Keep in mind why you need respite and how it benefits the both of you.

Avoid Caregiving Burnout

Unfortunately, far too many family caregivers suffer from burnout causing physical, mental and emotional exhaustion. Take the time you need to be your best self. Maintain friendships, stay active, eat well and take breaks to help keep yourself stay healthy and happy!
